My Great Uncle - Walter Chyle Jr. |
My Great-Uncle was Walter Chyle Jr. He was a pilot in the Air Force. On November 29, 1943 his B-17 Bomber was hit by enemy ground fire after a bombing raid near Germany. His plane stalled over the North Sea. His crew evacuated the plane and set adrift in life boats. A huge storm kept rescue crews from finding the plane and all the men aboard the life boats died except for Walter Chyle Jr. He finally was found by a German patrol boat off the coast of Holland and was transferred to a hospital. After this he was sent to a prisoner of war camp. When the war ended in Germany he was freed.
